Clothing / Layers

Over the years my gear has changed many times. Technology improves, brands come and go and my demands evolve. When it comes to clothing, I have never really felt like I was comfortable, warm and protected fully. Until now. I’ve been using a few pieces of KUIU here and there over the years and loved the performance and wear. But it wasn’t until I was able to use the entire system from base layers to outer shell that I was fully convinced. I love this gear and I love the brand. Even though I’m not a top end athlete, I kinda feel like one. LOL

Lets start out with the base layers. I’ll not cover tighty whities, nut huggers, boxer, briefs or bikini underwear here. I figure you all have your article of choice to support your boys and I’m not going to touch that. Besides my underwear of choice are magic. 😉

BASE LAYERING BASICS

Lets start out with the base layers. I’ll not cover tighty whities, nut huggers, boxer, briefs or bikini underwear here. I figure you all have your article of choice to support your boys and I’m not going to touch that. Besides my underwear of choice are magic. 😉

ITS ALL ABOUT THAT BASE

I don’t wear long handles (insulated underwear) on the top as a base since I prefer to layer up rather than layer down. It’s way more practical to add layers when I need them and not have to get naked to get down to my base T.

I generally run a long sleeve T to keep the sun off my arms but it is nice to have the same fabric option in an SS crew. I used to mainly use a wool T but found that the long term durability was lacking and despite what others say, it does stink. This Peloton fabric is lighter, dries faster, wicks better and gives me everything I loved about wool with some additional added features. And it lasts.

PELOTON 118 SS/LS CREW-T

The Peloton 118 redefines what a synthetic base layer should be: Lighter, quicker drying, spandex-free, with incredible next to skin comfort. Unparalleled dry times and durability make this synthetic base layer ideal as the foundation of your cold-weather layering system or as a stand-alone shirt in the heat.

• 4 oz/113.4 g
• Unparalleled dry times
• Spandex-free stretch
• Toray Makspec treated for odor control

OK, lets get to the BASE info. IF I do wear base layers in the winter or late months I will use the Peloton Zip off Base Layers. BUT I RARELY IF EVER use long handles (insulated underwear) on the bottom either. My legs don’t get cold. And if they do, I don’t notice it. AGAIN, layer up not down.

I generally have two or three different pants that I’ll wear for Warm, Cool and Cold weather hunts. I could probably get away with two different pairs for all my hunts but I don’t have to. 🙂

Peloton 97 Zip-Off Fleece Bottom

Incredibly warm, light, and fast drying, this synthetic fleece is the perfect ultralight base layer for early to mid-season hunts. Full length side zippers allow quick and easy on and off without removing your pants and boots.

• 4.5 ounces
• Toray Karuishi fleece – 97g/m²
• Makspec™ treated for odor control
• Spandex-free all direction stretch
• Full length leg zippers

WARM WEATHER TYPE HUNTING & ADVENTURES

Next I’ll cover the “Warm” weather layers that I’ve found to be the most useful. Warm weather hunts for me can be in June or August depending. And in some areas where I hunt, especially Nevada it can be 100+ degrees in August. Or an afternoon thunder bumper can roll in and drop 6″ of hail on your head in a matter of minutes.

For the most part I am going as light as I dare with pants and jacket this time of year.

FEELING GOOD LEWIS

Its all about feeling good and staying warm but not too warm.

Tiburon Hunting Pants

The Tiburon Pant is the perfect pant for warm early-season hunts. This pant solves the problem of harsh temperatures on many summer and early fall hunts and scouting trips.

• 12.5 oz

COOL WEATHER TYPE HUNTING & ADVENTURES

Next I’ll cover the “Cool” weather layers that I’ve found to be the most useful. Cool weather hunts for me can be in April/May or September/October depending.

GETTING A NID BIT TIPPILY

September and October are by far my favorite months to be in the wild. The weather is cool but not cold and the animals are cruising the countryside more than ever.

This pant is very NEW. I’ve only had the chance to wear them around the hous, on my hikes and as an everyday wear. But I can tell you that as a man who wears pants a lot 🙂 I dig these suckers.

Good pants are everything. If you don’t have a great, flexible, durable and damn good fitting pair of pants then you’re missing out. I’ve been missing out for years. It is an amazing feeling when you’re clothing feels like a part of you. I like my pants to be relatively light but they have to be durable. Not many clothing manufactures have this down. KUIU has it down.
